About and privacy

The Computer Literacy Academy teaches absolute beginners how computers work and how to use them safely, on Ubuntu/Linux and on Windows. It is free and has no accounts.

What is stored, and where

• Your lesson progress, quiz results, bookmarks and display settings are saved in this browser, on this device.
• Nothing is uploaded. There is no server holding learner data, no database, no analytics and no advertising.
• If you clear your browser data, switch browsers or use another computer, your progress will not be there. Use export and import to keep a copy or move it.

About the pictures

Every diagram and illustration was created for this course. Pictures of operating system screens are simulated interfaces and are labelled as such: they are not real screenshots, and your own computer may look a little different depending on its version.

About the labs

Labs are simulations that run in your browser. They never change your real computer. When a skill needs your real laptop, the lesson says so and gives safe instructions.

Accuracy

Instructions for version-sensitive things link to official documentation at the end of each lesson. Menus and names change between releases, so if your screen differs, trust the official documentation and the idea behind the steps.
